Week #13 – LIFE’S simple pleasuresa warm puppy

Oh, it doesn’t exactly have to be a warm puppy, it could be any family pet.  There are many families who are dog lovers, or cat lovers… or any other kind of domesticated animal lover.  And there are some families that are highly allergic, travel outside of the home often or just don’t want another ‘thing’ to take care.  And that’s alright!!! We’re a two dog family and we love our furbabies! And I especially love to give other fur babies hugs and enjoy their excitement when we meet on a walk!

The more people I meet, the more I like my dog – anonymous

Hopefully, in upcoming blog posts, I can highlight some of my other animal creative greeting cards. Sometimes, the animals can state a sentiment so much sweeter!

Yesterday was a dog.  Today I’m a dog. Tomorrow I’ll probably still be a dog.  sigh, there’s so little hope for advancement – Snoopy

PS – stay tuned for more changes… I’m still in blogover (makeover) mood and my blog layout and design is in chaos!!!  Happy Easter!

I’ll Be dog-gone!

March 27, 2013

Good dogs are with us for a little while to teach us how to love, like its our job, because it is!

Oh, I so much like making doggie doodles, labra-doodles and hound doodles!!!  These series of dog cards are custom-made.

This week on my blog I am highlighting Week #13 – LIFE’S simple pleasuresfamily pets.

I enjoy being given the challenge to design creative greetings for family friends who have special pets in their lives!  I try to doodle the essence of the pet …. and sometimes these cards become my favorites!

Recently, our neighborhood has lost many four-legged friends. Just this side of heaven is a place called Rainbow Bridge, (<—click on that link and bring a tissue) ! Special friends: Charlie, Buddy, Kozmo, Maizo, Daisy & Zelda.

My Dog Licked this Post

March 26, 2013

Good dogs are with us for a little while to teach us how to love like it’s our job… because it is!

I’m doing a ‘blogover’… another new word I learned… just like ‘bookfessions’ (confessions of a book addict) from Week #5.

A ‘blogover‘ is like a makeover for your blog, and since I’m in the middle of a on-line class “Bloom Your Blog” with Jessica Sprague, every day I’m learning something new through Photo Shop and my WordPress blog site…so don’t be surprised when you come back tomorrow and this page looks different once again!

tuckerWeek #13 – LIFE’S simple pleasuresa furry family member.

Not everyone is a dog, cat, gerbil, hedgehog, guinea pig, lizard lover.  I admit that daily care and up keep of two dogs can be tiresome at times, Dogs are not our whole life, but they make our life whole!

Tucker is a Pomeranian, a Pom or a Pom Pom (or Kujo).  As far as we know he is a pure bred dog, but there are no papers or family history on him since he is a rescue/shelter dog.  His breed is considered the Spitz type and is from Northern Poland/Eastern Germany and named from the area.  He is considered a toy dog, so that means bred smaller and is very friendly and lively.  They bond very quickly with their owners and are very protective.  Our Tucker is very bossy too!!!  Every day I just look at him, and 4 years later he melts my heart with such adorable expressions!

Here’s Cooper again!  I love these dog poses from the nose angle… there are bunches of these all over the internet. Cooper is a mongrel, a mutt, a mixed breed dog.  Mongrel sounds really derogatory…. better…. he’s a Heintz 57 or better yet a Bitzer…. bits o’ this, bits o’ that!!!  Often with a mixed breed dog you will identify him with the breed they most resemble, in this case, a Labrador Retriever.

My dogs have been a great source of inspiration.  I created my own doodle of each of them and now try to put them in different surroundings to create fun cards with sassy sentiments!  I’ve doodled other friends dogs and created faux card lines exclusively for them.  I’ll show you a few of those in my up-coming posts, so stay tuned and come back and visit my creative twist of LIFE’S simple pleasures!!!

Some days you’re the dog, some days you’re the hydrant!

Puppy Love

March 25, 2013

I aspire to be the person my dog thinks I am! Meet my new friend

Can you believe we are at Week #13?  That makes us a quarter through 2013!!  I am exploring LIFE’s simple pleasurespets. I don’t want to limit a simple pleasure to just the animals I have around my house.  Pets, although they need lots of time, attention and care, can bring so much joy and love to a house, to a family…. to a home.  Pet lovers are a different breed.tuckerHappiness is a warm puppy!!!  ~ Charles Schultz

springdogsCooper, our lab mix will be 8 years old this year.  Our big guy, he has the sweetest disposition and has been the best of friends! He’s beginning to slow down a bit and is getting some grey around his muzzle.  He loves to lounge on the steps in the sunshine.  Just with his eyes he tells me what he needs!

Tucker is our fuzzy bear and he is a 5-year-old Pomeranian.  We rescued him from a holistic dog shelter when he was 11 months old and he has many nicknames…. Tuck, Tucky, Fozzy Bear, Buddy and my favorite Kujo!  He’s tiny, but feisty and he lets you know when he’s not very happy!  When we walk him, neighbors who don’t know him want to steal him away because I’ll admit, he is very cute…. they just don’t know that it all is an act!! The words, don’t bite the hand that feeds you, not in his vocabulary!!!

That’s the college boy  {we’ve had him since the day he was born, ha ha} (who will be 20) with our furbabies on a walk in the woods last week during his spring break.  A boy and his dogs, very heart warming, don’t you think?

Week #13 – LIFE’S simple pleasuressome puppy love!

March 22, 2013

From the beginning to the end… an American English Idiom which has a figurative meaning for a meal from the first course, until the dessert.  It can mean  to be all-inclusive from start to finish in a project or task as well.

soup1As part of my year of 2013 and discovering or re-discovering LIFE’S Simple Pleasures… I broke down the letters in LIFE’S to:

  • L earning
  • I nspiring
  • F eeling
  • E volving
  • S hining

I love to learn and try new things.  I’ve been expanding my cooking talents and along with baking cookies, I’ve been experimenting with a simple pleasure ~ comfort foods, which includes soups.  Above is one of our delicious meals of Chicken Bacon & Wild Rice Soup.

Now don’t be fooled, although soup is a liquid food, technically we ‘eat’ it because we use a spoon.  And remember, broth based soups have fewer calories than milk/cream/cheese based soups.

meals 001Comfort foods provide nostalgia or sentimental feelings.  The phrase was added to Websters dictionary in 1977.  Often comfort foods are soft in consistency and rich in calories, they also pique emotions.  Although kind of mushy looking, that is exactly what our dinner was one night, slider bbq pork sandwiches, Kraft Macaroni and cheese and crispy tater tots.  Easy to prepare but not necessarily calorie FREE!

nutHere are the nuts!!!!! Which is really a fruit?  it is composed of a hard shell and a seed pod.

Week #12 – LIFE’S simple pleasures comfort foods.

Now if you wanted, there are over 82 choices of Campbell’s soups and who knows how many other brands and flavors.  And with grilled cheese, it used to be a slice or two of Kraft American cheese on white bread…. now the varieties of cheeses are endless and add to that the different kinds of artisian breads.

I had a few friends respond to my request that a good old fashioned bowl of *tomato soup and a toasty grilled cheese sandwich was something that made them very happy!  Simple, right?  Let’s just go back with the *basic simple pleasures!  But I’m just saying, there are so many choices these days… you really have to seek the simple ones!!

Winter is the time   for comfort   for good food   and Warmth  for the touch   of a friendly hand  and for a talk beside the fire  it is the time   for home. ~ Edith Sitwell

I’d love for you to leave a comment.  What is your favorite comfort food and does it provide a sentimental feeling?

Mmm, Mmm Good!

“There is nothing like soup. It is by nature eccentric: no two are ever alike, unless of course you get your soup in a can.”  Laurie Colwin, ‘Home Cooking’ (1988)

soupcanSoup became popular with the invention of canning in the 19th century.  For thousands of years prior to that, there is evidence early civilization made forms of soup, they just didn’t have a vessel that could hold all the liquid as well.

This week, as LIFE’S simple pleasures, I’m highlighting comfort foods, and when I think of that, soup and sandwich come to mind.

Rachel Ray coined a phrase other than her famous Yummo… but she makes Stoups… which is a stew and soup together.  The main difference is that a soup normally has more liquid.  Soups can be clear, which is a broth base or they can be thick soups, which are often milk/cream base. In 1897 the first condensed soup was developed by Dr. John T. Dorrance.  I currently counted about 82 varieties listed on the Campbell’s website.

In 1962 Pop Artist Andy Warhol created one of his famous pieces of visual art… the soup can which sold for $1,500.  His picture depicted 32 soup cans which was the same amount of varieties of soup sold by  the Campbell’s company.  At the time, he was the most renowned pop artist and the highest-price living artist!

It’s amazing, food is art, art can be food…. LIFE’S simple pleasuresWEEK #12comfort foods.

No Soup For You

March 19, 2013

Hello there!  If it’s your first time, welcome to my blog!  If you are a returning friend or family member, please excuse my mess of colors and ever-changing headers and blog layouts.

Once again, I’m trying to find the ‘perfect’ way to combine and highlight LIFE’S simple pleasures and my unique and whimsical paper craft hobby, and I’m trying to do this while I’m in the middle of an online Bloom your Blog class by Jessica Sprague…. so honestly my ideas and designs are all a bit jumbled.

It’s Week #12 of 2013 and I didn’t think about this topic for this time of the year, but since the calendar reads that it is still winter and the temperature reading 17 degrees with a windchill hovering at 0 degrees… I think it’s okay to talk about something that can warm the body! (Last year at this time it was spring break for the college boy and it was an unusually warm week with temperatures in the mid-west hovering at 80 weird and wonderful degrees!!!!)

Week # 12LIFE’S simple pleasures ~ comfort foods

Nothing is better than a bowl of Campbell’s’ tomato soup and a grilled cheese sandwich, with of course a dill pickle and a nice cold glass of milk!  Take it up a notch and to the soup add some fresh basil and a bit of fresh garlic, oyster crackers and pour it in a fun huge mug… and for the sandwich add Franks Red Hot sauce and make a Buffalo Chicken grilled Panini 3 cheese sandwich. Instead of a pickle add a juicy pepperoncini and a tall glass of Passion Tea Lemonade full of ice.  Yummy!!!  This is not your ‘mother’s’ tomato soup and grilled cheese!!!!!  Comfort foods Ten point Oh(my)!!!

See you soon in my next post…. don’t be too surprised if you see some new features…. like I said, I’m temporarily under construction!!! :0)

PAUSE, for a moment please

March 18, 2013

uglyweek11Okay, my active verb this week on DO52 is pause… it’s only Monday of Week #12 and I’m not quite ready to post a simple pleasure… and I’m in the middle of taking an online class to work on the layout of my blog… so, in the mean time… you can enjoy one of my UGLY paintings… yes! I meant to paint this and I’m learning to embrace my inner UGLY… and yes it is that!  I like pretty things… this was quite a challenge to be UGLY!

So, please excuse my dust as I try to create even MORE fun on my blog!  Have a great Mondy…Peggy :0)

The Bird is the Word

March 15, 2013

A bird does not sing because it has an answer.  It sings because it has a song ~ Chinese Proverb

birdtra 001

Who would have thought that exploring LIFE’S simple pleasures, that you could find out so much about ordinary every day things.  In Week # 11 I’m exploring birds.  Well, if I was a real scientist I would be a Orinthologist, which is the study of birds and one of the branches of Zoology.

There are over 10,000 different species of birds in the world.  I’m sure there are just as many books about the topic and as many sites to google search as well.

Anyone can be a bird watcher.  Just thinking back when the kids were small, it was always fun to go to the park and watch the ducks swimming in a pond;  at the zoo it was always a treat when the peacocks would cross our path; on a bike trail in the conservatory it’s always a breath-taking site to see a loon or swan coming in for a smooth landing into one of the reservoirs. You can watch birds from a park bench, standing on the corner or walking through the woods.

mache2I love finding a twist on things too… so many bird analogies and names, there are Angry Birds, you can flip the bird, we’ve got Big Bird and Larry Bird, Lady Bird and other famous people with bird names… Sheryl Crow,  Jay Leno, Robin Williams, Ethan Hawke, Russell Crowe, Lynn Swann, Joaquin Phoenix, musical groups the Byrds, the Eagles, counting Crows, Dixie Chicks… sports teams Baltimore Orioles, Philadelphia Eagles, Alanta Falcons, Arizona Cardinals.

Someday, there may be a simple pleasure 11.1 on birds, because there are so many ways to see and hear them.  Come back and visit me real soon!

Gliding on air streams,
travel forever upwards,
on top of the world.

When you are out on a limb, the whole world is at your feet.

bluebirdIn Week #11 – LIFE’S simple pleasures, I am exploring the variety of birds that visit my back yard.

Yesterday I mentioned how ‘noisy’ they were on my morning walk through my neighborhood. Today I will show you what I see most mornings while sitting at my kitchen table, enjoying a nice cold Iced Coffee with fuzzy socks on my feet*. (*A few of my simple pleasures that I have already highlighted here on my blog).

feeder1The birds around our house are a bit plump it appears.  They are fed quite well by my dear husband.  Although the above bird is not tiny, he blends in well with his surroundings.  Our winter, like all weather has been quite strange.  We went over 335 days without measurable snow.  And then when the snow fell, we got 5-8″, mostly of heavy wet stuff.  17th snowiest February or something like that!  I love how the snow sits on the branches, with the bird!

feeder2I don’t know much about birds.  A bird is a bird, right?  But we think that the ones who come visit our bird feeder are House Sparrows.  House Sparrows are noisy sparrows that flutter down from eaves and fencerows to hop and peck at crumbs or birdseed.

feeder3I tried to get pictures of the pretty Cardinals, but I tired standing still on a kitchen chair to get a view above the window screens.  They certainly are fun to watch every day, however, they make a grand mess which attracts our local squirrel friends!

feeder4Well, I guess that’s better than this article I just saw…

MONTPELIER, Vt. (AP) — The Vermont  Fish and Wildlife Department is urging people to take down their bird  feeders to avoid attracting hungry bears emerging from their winter dens.

If you find yourself out on a limb, have a seat, enjoy the view.
