Aint No Spring Chicken

April 5, 2013

Hello – until I completely decide which type of  blog I want to create, for the moment I have moved to

We are at Week #14 of 2013 and my blog posts this week are about one of LIFE’S simple pleasures ~ Spring.

I loved one of the quotes I found the other day by Henry Van Dyke, there is a difference between the first day of spring and the first spring day!!  It’s a matter of how you put a spin on things, in all walks of LIFE don’t you think???

In the mid-west we could say that a day with sunshine and blue skies with temperatures in the high 40s is a perfect Spring day!  Especially coming off a winter with 8″ snowfalls and wind chills of below zero.  On  gorgeous day like today, someone in the southwest might think our spring weather is their winter and be freezing their tootsies off in their leather cowboy boots!

The Spring equinox which started on March 20, 2013 at 7:02 am is the beginning of nature’s renewal. It’s really simple to enjoy spring when you take a moment out of you busy day and stop to really listen to the new sounds and observe animal behaviors and the way that the plants grow.

I may no longer be a ‘spring chicken’ but I truly realized this year and writing this blog … that LIFE is simple when you live SIMPLY.  Being in Week #14 of this year has been an amazing journey and I can’t wait to see what’s around the corner.

Thank you for letting me share my he♥art.  Creating whimsical paper crafts with a twist of LIFE has been such a blast for me. My creative greetings are for sale by the way.  You wont find anything like them at the Hallmark store, and my prices are quite reasonable. Just think a bit in advance *wink* have any extra ordinary people in your life that are celebrating special events?  Help a small business grow!!!! :0)

A single act of kindness throws out roots in all directions and the roots SPRING up and make new trees ~ Amelia Earhart

PS ~ I’m still in ‘blogover’ mode, so when you come back and visit me…. things may look a little different… just like me, a little quirky and odd, but loyal to the end!

Now go out there and BRIGHTEN SOMEONE’S DAY!

Please Pay Attention!

April 3, 2013

I am going to try to pay attention to the spring. I am going to look around  at all the flowers, and look up at the hectic trees. I am going to close my eyes  and listen. ~ Anne Lamott

I think this quote sums up a lot of what I’m trying to do here, this year on my blog… Year of LIFE’S Simple pleasures.  I want to pay attention! The hard part is going to be having patients for those around me who didn’t get the memo! (Pay attention while driving, use your turn signals… don’t text… for those who stop in the middle of an aisle and don’t realize people are behind them…. pet peeve list)

Bright flowers popping up are always a sure sign of Spring!

The first day of spring is one thing, and the first spring day is another.  The difference between them is sometimes as great as a month. ~ Henry Van Dyke

This is a great quote and so true!!  If you are reading this post today, April 3rd.. look to the right column of my blog (this is a copy of my blogger blog here: ) you will see a recently posted picture on Instagram of the bright blue sky in our neck of the woods.  It really looks like spring out… but the thermometer reads differently… 21 degrees, it’s still pretty chilly 10 days into 2013 Spring.  For the mid-west the weathermen say we are about 15 degrees below ‘normal’ for this time of year.

Week #14 – LIFE’S simple pleasuresSpring

Fun little whimsical gnomes will soon be peering up through their hidden holes in my garden.  These funky little guys add a simple charm to my secret garden.

Rite of Spring, Spring Fever, Spring Chicken, Spring Break, Spring Training… Spring Cleaning!!!

When the day comes to SPRING Clean my garage I hope it’s a bit warmer than the 32 degrees in there now.  Heavy duty top to bottom cleaning is something I really do look forward to.  As our family changes and ages… some of the ‘stuff’ needs to be sent packing!  So, here is a before picture in one corner of the garage. It just feels right in my soul to clean un-used items out and organize what’s left!  It saves time and money if everything has a place, and every place has it’s things!

(for the moment, i am writing on blogger… then copying here for wordpress….so, please bare with me until I figure out which blow works best)

Here’s to Spring!!

Blossom by blossom the spring brings!!!

Spring Fever

April 2, 2013

Spring, the season of new beginnings!

Today, April 2, 2013

Don’t you think February and March went by in the blink of an eye??  Everyone around here in the mid-west was beyond tired talking about the weather. And all the cold and snow we eventually got, seemed to last forever and was very late in the winter season.

I always get the best indication of the seasons through my window on the world, my backyard and patio.

After a few weeks of different ‘spring breaks’ our house is back to ‘normal’ today.

We all know spring is coming because some groundhog tells us… but he could be and is often wrong!!

Spring is coming when you fill out your NCAA basketball brackets (by the way, it’s looking like this momma who came in last place last year…. might be winning and taking $$ from my babies!!)

Spring and Easter are normally synonymous.

Once the newspapers’ sport section start showing baseball we all know there is Spring Training with Opening Day, not far behind.

Spring sales sell sandals when we are barely out of boots.  Spring fever happens when we get our first few beautiful days and no longer want to wear our dark, drab coats of winter… so we freeze our butts off to tell Mother Nature we know the calendar reads SPRING!  April Showers, bring May Flowers.  It’s Spring Time.

Once the last snow melted, I saw these tulip buds stretching out of the mulch to reach for the sunshine!

Week #13 – LIFE’S simple pleasuresa warm puppy

Oh, it doesn’t exactly have to be a warm puppy, it could be any family pet.  There are many families who are dog lovers, or cat lovers… or any other kind of domesticated animal lover.  And there are some families that are highly allergic, travel outside of the home often or just don’t want another ‘thing’ to take care.  And that’s alright!!! We’re a two dog family and we love our furbabies! And I especially love to give other fur babies hugs and enjoy their excitement when we meet on a walk!

The more people I meet, the more I like my dog – anonymous

Hopefully, in upcoming blog posts, I can highlight some of my other animal creative greeting cards. Sometimes, the animals can state a sentiment so much sweeter!

Yesterday was a dog.  Today I’m a dog. Tomorrow I’ll probably still be a dog.  sigh, there’s so little hope for advancement – Snoopy

PS – stay tuned for more changes… I’m still in blogover (makeover) mood and my blog layout and design is in chaos!!!  Happy Easter!

My Dog Licked this Post

March 26, 2013

Good dogs are with us for a little while to teach us how to love like it’s our job… because it is!

I’m doing a ‘blogover’… another new word I learned… just like ‘bookfessions’ (confessions of a book addict) from Week #5.

A ‘blogover‘ is like a makeover for your blog, and since I’m in the middle of a on-line class “Bloom Your Blog” with Jessica Sprague, every day I’m learning something new through Photo Shop and my WordPress blog site…so don’t be surprised when you come back tomorrow and this page looks different once again!

tuckerWeek #13 – LIFE’S simple pleasuresa furry family member.

Not everyone is a dog, cat, gerbil, hedgehog, guinea pig, lizard lover.  I admit that daily care and up keep of two dogs can be tiresome at times, Dogs are not our whole life, but they make our life whole!

Tucker is a Pomeranian, a Pom or a Pom Pom (or Kujo).  As far as we know he is a pure bred dog, but there are no papers or family history on him since he is a rescue/shelter dog.  His breed is considered the Spitz type and is from Northern Poland/Eastern Germany and named from the area.  He is considered a toy dog, so that means bred smaller and is very friendly and lively.  They bond very quickly with their owners and are very protective.  Our Tucker is very bossy too!!!  Every day I just look at him, and 4 years later he melts my heart with such adorable expressions!

Here’s Cooper again!  I love these dog poses from the nose angle… there are bunches of these all over the internet. Cooper is a mongrel, a mutt, a mixed breed dog.  Mongrel sounds really derogatory…. better…. he’s a Heintz 57 or better yet a Bitzer…. bits o’ this, bits o’ that!!!  Often with a mixed breed dog you will identify him with the breed they most resemble, in this case, a Labrador Retriever.

My dogs have been a great source of inspiration.  I created my own doodle of each of them and now try to put them in different surroundings to create fun cards with sassy sentiments!  I’ve doodled other friends dogs and created faux card lines exclusively for them.  I’ll show you a few of those in my up-coming posts, so stay tuned and come back and visit my creative twist of LIFE’S simple pleasures!!!

Some days you’re the dog, some days you’re the hydrant!

Puppy Love

March 25, 2013

I aspire to be the person my dog thinks I am! Meet my new friend

Can you believe we are at Week #13?  That makes us a quarter through 2013!!  I am exploring LIFE’s simple pleasurespets. I don’t want to limit a simple pleasure to just the animals I have around my house.  Pets, although they need lots of time, attention and care, can bring so much joy and love to a house, to a family…. to a home.  Pet lovers are a different breed.tuckerHappiness is a warm puppy!!!  ~ Charles Schultz

springdogsCooper, our lab mix will be 8 years old this year.  Our big guy, he has the sweetest disposition and has been the best of friends! He’s beginning to slow down a bit and is getting some grey around his muzzle.  He loves to lounge on the steps in the sunshine.  Just with his eyes he tells me what he needs!

Tucker is our fuzzy bear and he is a 5-year-old Pomeranian.  We rescued him from a holistic dog shelter when he was 11 months old and he has many nicknames…. Tuck, Tucky, Fozzy Bear, Buddy and my favorite Kujo!  He’s tiny, but feisty and he lets you know when he’s not very happy!  When we walk him, neighbors who don’t know him want to steal him away because I’ll admit, he is very cute…. they just don’t know that it all is an act!! The words, don’t bite the hand that feeds you, not in his vocabulary!!!

That’s the college boy  {we’ve had him since the day he was born, ha ha} (who will be 20) with our furbabies on a walk in the woods last week during his spring break.  A boy and his dogs, very heart warming, don’t you think?

The Bird is the Word

March 15, 2013

A bird does not sing because it has an answer.  It sings because it has a song ~ Chinese Proverb

birdtra 001

Who would have thought that exploring LIFE’S simple pleasures, that you could find out so much about ordinary every day things.  In Week # 11 I’m exploring birds.  Well, if I was a real scientist I would be a Orinthologist, which is the study of birds and one of the branches of Zoology.

There are over 10,000 different species of birds in the world.  I’m sure there are just as many books about the topic and as many sites to google search as well.

Anyone can be a bird watcher.  Just thinking back when the kids were small, it was always fun to go to the park and watch the ducks swimming in a pond;  at the zoo it was always a treat when the peacocks would cross our path; on a bike trail in the conservatory it’s always a breath-taking site to see a loon or swan coming in for a smooth landing into one of the reservoirs. You can watch birds from a park bench, standing on the corner or walking through the woods.

mache2I love finding a twist on things too… so many bird analogies and names, there are Angry Birds, you can flip the bird, we’ve got Big Bird and Larry Bird, Lady Bird and other famous people with bird names… Sheryl Crow,  Jay Leno, Robin Williams, Ethan Hawke, Russell Crowe, Lynn Swann, Joaquin Phoenix, musical groups the Byrds, the Eagles, counting Crows, Dixie Chicks… sports teams Baltimore Orioles, Philadelphia Eagles, Alanta Falcons, Arizona Cardinals.

Someday, there may be a simple pleasure 11.1 on birds, because there are so many ways to see and hear them.  Come back and visit me real soon!

Gliding on air streams,
travel forever upwards,
on top of the world.

Week # 11 – LIFE’S Simple pleasuresbirds

I’m very fortunate!  The window to my world backs up to a field for our local electric power towers… before that, our backyard has lots of trees that house natural beauty and closer yet are my patio and garden.

When I sit to type my blog post I always have some company.  It could be my fur babies sleeping at my feet, squirrels running up their jungle gym of tall trees, or birds feasting at the feeder.

bird1The early bird might get the worm, but the second mouse gets the cheese!

We have house sparrows, woodpeckers, cardinals, morning doves, black birds and on occasion… our resident hawk.  I will have a few more pictures to post soon.  I’ve stood still for 15 minutes trying to get the pretty birds… but it’s hard to get a good picture behind the windows, I have to be above the screens.

A simple pleasure is just to take a moment and watch the birds.  What a bonus it is to hear them sing! Pretty bird, pretty bird!

I always wonder why birds stay in the same place when they can fly anywhere on the earth.  Then  I ask myself the same question ~ Harun Yahya

Yellow Envelope Project

March 8, 2013

Sometimes, the easy things are very hard to explain.envelopes_edited-1

This week I posted about my reasoning behind sending FuN MaiL. If you haven’t read my posts, just scroll down a bit to see what I’m soap boxing about!   There is something good in every day to send some FuN MaiL.  An easy way to Brighten Someone’s Day is to send a note that you are thinking of them.

Week #10 – LIFE’S simple pleasuresmail … is good for both the sender and the recipient!

But now I need to step it up a notch and tell you more about the Yellow Envelope Project.

nov29 023The Yellow Envelope Project is House of Shine’s initiative to recognize ordinary people who shine, and reward them for their out-of-the-ordinary efforts. In a world where negative news dominates newspapers … it’s a simple way to make someone else feel good!

phoneNOV 051

For a few years now I have contributed to sending anonymous greeting cards in decorated YELLOW envelopes to unsuspecting people all over the United States.  We have recognized people who selflessly go out of their way to help others and let them know that we recognize their attempts to SHINE and make their corner of the world a brighter place for others they come in contact with.

shine2I am fortunate enough to be able to create a FUN creative greetings!! that I seal up in my anonymous envelope.   I scribble out my signature on the back, or eliminate it all together.  Although I wish I was making a bigger business for myself sending my cards off to Texas, Georgia, Alabama, New York etc… it’s more about the heartfelt thanks I send to the worthy recipient!

mail3Can you imagine this person opening their mailbox and flooding out are 2,3, 7 or more YELLOW envelopes  (or white envelopes doodled with yellow markers, stickers and other fun stuff) addressed to them, and inside are notes of encouragement, recognition, validation and thanks for just being them?

In some ways I hope the recipients don’t think we’re stalkers, because often the person who nominated them tells us a bit of what this wonderful person did and how they SHINE!

My reason for posting about this topic is my hope that I sparked some further interest for you about the Yellow Envelope Project. Although it is a very easy and simple thing to do, it is somewhat a little involved for a full explanation.

You can click on any of the links I posted here and it will take you directly to some great places! It’s possible you know someone who should be nominated to be a recipient of some positive mail, you may want to forward my post to a friend who enjoys doing Random Acts of Kindness, or maybe when you check out the House of Shine you want to be that someone who helps Brighten Someone’s Day!

Weeks #10 – LIFE’S simple pleasuresmail…. and more important the YELLOW Envelope Project.

Hello Sunshine

February 18, 2013

You are my sunshine!

What a difference a few hours makes!

When I began this post earlier this morning, it was a bright and sunny day with blue skies and temperatures stretching unusually high into the upper 40s… now it’s overcast, but it brought me inspiration to Week #8 – LIFE’S simple pleasures ~ the sun!

I notice I feel different when the sun SHINES! More alive… if that is possible!  I’m sure too, in every season of the year … I will be able to post something about how the sun feels slightly different to me. (You have something  to look forward to…. spring sun 8.1, summer sun 8.2, fall sun 8.3)

It’s still the same big star at the center of the solar system…. but on a winter day when there has been gloomy days filled with cold and blustery conditions… a day full of sun shine and warmth is a true simple pleasure!

At times I try very hard to believe that… where you go no matter the weather, always bring your own sunshine!  I need to keep my journal with me and look up my doodle pages that remind me that this is possible!

Some days you just have to create your own sunshine!
